While in Aspen don’t forget to visit the Aspen Recreation Center because it has a lot to offer. The center closes before 9pm in the evening and so there is quite a lot for enjoyment here. If you get there right after leaving the slopes, and eat a late dinner – after the center closes – you will have plenty of time to enjoy what the ARC has to offer.

The climbing walls at the center are the biggest attraction. The ARC features approximately 3100 feet of climbing walls for your enjoyment. There is also a 3-D climbing tower with more than 25 routes and four auto belays.

Another nice feature at the Aspen Recreation Center is the pool area. The James E. Moore Pool area features two pools. One pool is 25 yards in length and features six lanes, while the other pool is for recreation and has a two story slide, a lazy river, and spray features. You will also find a dry sauna, a steam room, and hot tubs in the pool area.

The Lewis Ice Arena is also located at the Aspen Recreation Center. Completed in the Spring of 2003, the arena features an NHL regulation size skating surface, grandstand seating for 450, a skate shop, locker rooms, and shower rooms.

Public skating, skating lessons, figure skating, youth and adult hockey, and skating shows are available. You can also host private parties at the arena. High altitude training is also offered here. You will also find cardio and weight rooms at the center, and many fitness classes are also offered.

The Aspen Recreation Center hosts many off-site activities in the Aspen area as well, such as golf, tennis, climbing, aquatics, sailing, skateboarding, ceramics classes, baseball, softball, soccer, hockey, and various camps. Babysitting services are available at the center as well. This place is a great way to wrap up a day of activity and wind down before your evening meal.

Again, the Aspen Recreation Center closes just before 9pm, so make sure you head there right after leaving the slopes for the day. Admission for guests is $13 for youths and $15 for adults. Admission includes access to the climbing towers, swimming pool area, ice skating rink, weight room, cardio room, adult fitness classes, water aerobics, climbing wall and playhouse, and tennis courts.

Prince Edward Island, Canada also known as the island of Annie Shirley was made famous by Lucy Maud Montgomery in her series, Anne of Green Cables. The island is known for its scenic beauty and rich agricultural traditions. Those who are the literary fans know it as the home of a little orphan girl named Anne Shirley

Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of the Anne of Green Gables series, was born on Prince Edward Island and used the island as the setting for 19 of her 20 novels. Tributes to Anne, her world, and her author, are all over the island.

Every August the L.M. Montgomery Festival takes place in Cavendish. The festival is a three-day tribute to Anne and her creator featuring events like an old-fashioned variety show, craft classes, carriage rides, writers’ workshops, barn dances, and more. In New London, the Lucy Maud Montgomery Birthplace is open to visitors May-October annually. This small historic location is where the author was born. Special exhibits feature a replica of her wedding dress and scrapbooks containing some of the author’s poetry.

The Anne of Green Gables Museum is at Silverbush, the home of the author’s aunt and uncle. Montgomery was married here in 1911 and the museum features a number of family heirlooms as well as a collection of first editions of her works.

The ultimate site for fans of the series is, of course, Green Gables House in Cavendish. The house, built in 1830 and where the author spent many happy childhood visits with her cousins, was restored after being damaged in a fire in 1997. Managed by Parks Canada, it now features re-creations of scenes from the novels. There is some good news to all those wildlife enthusiasts who are looking and searching something different. The good news is that you can make a trip to Churchill, North Manitoba, Canada and view the Polar Bear in their natural habitat.

Indulge yourself in a little retro luxury with a sleeper ticket on VIA Rail’s Hudson Bay, a 2-day and night trip from Winnipeg to Churchill. The indulgence is worth it, since the destination, Churchill, is a no-frills sub-arctic town. This train is another of VIA Rail’s outdoor enthusiast routes and offers their unscheduled stop service to passengers who make advance arrangements for it.

Churchill, a tiny village with a permanent population that fluctuates between 800 and 1100, is known as the Polar Bear Capital of the World. The town, sitting between the Churchill River and Hudson Bay, is on the polar bears’ annual migration route. Peak season for polar bear sighting is from mid-October to mid-November each year. Polar bear viewing is best done by arrangement with one of the many tour operators in Churchill who will take out in a tundra buggy, vehicles specially designed for the safety of people, polar bears, and the local tundra. Manitoba’s beluga whale population migrates to the Churchill River and Hudson Bay every summer during July and August. There are approximately 20,000 whales living in the area, and about 3,000 of them summer in the river estuary to give birth. Visitors have a chance to view, and, with many tours, swim with, these beautiful creatures.

Bird-watching enthusiasts should try to make the trip to Churchill sometime between mid-June and mid-July. According to the Churchill Northern Studies Institute, birdwatchers can expect to see approximately 100 species, easily, over the course of a four- to seven-day trip.
